Well it finally happened; I warned you! Don’t shop on the phone!
You know when you think you are really negotiating a purchase well and you finally get the price you want for something you need? You’re convinced you outwitted the store personnel and that your “superior negotiating techniques” won you favor and allowed you to get that” too good to be true deal that you brag about to your friends”? “Hey guys, look what I did”, only to find out that you got ROYALLY Hosed”? Well, this is what happened to a very nice customer that came to see us this week. This started about 15 months ago where he got taken advantage of by the shop he went to. This is really more of a story about the shop he went to and how he got hosed by getting a price over the phone.
He told us he called our shop but we apparently wouldn’t give him a price over the phone for something that we couldn’t know until we actually diagnosed and inspected the transmission of his car. We don’t give phone quotes for this because price is almost NEVER THE PRICE and for rebuilding a transmission, it is IMPOSSIBLE TO KNOW THE PRICE BEFORE inspecting the inside of the transmission to see what parts went bad! He phone shopped and went to a transmission shop with over 15 locations here in the Metroplex that in deed quoted him a guaranteed price for a rebuilt transmission over the phone before ever seeing the vehicle. First Red Flag!
He takes it to them and after 3 weeks gets his car back. All is well until last month. His transmission is acting up and asks us to diagnosis and it is in fact a transmission problem. Now this is where it gets interesting. We pull the vehicle in and my installer yelps “I know that car”; saying that he installed that transmission at the place he worked at previous to our shop. He continued that he knows the other shop sold him a rebuilt transmission, but had him install a USED Junk Yard transmission. The customer thought he paid for one thing but got something else.
I can guarantee you that if this is the case, it is because of the phone shopping for a price and the fact that the other shop couldn’t rebuild the transmission for what they quoted the customer over the phone. Being stuck into possibly taking a loss on rebuilding the unit they just put in a Junk Yard transmission with a similar warranty and hope it lasted until the warranty expired.
Please, Please, don’t base your decisions simply on a phone quote for something the shop can’t possibly know; let common sense prevail. Find a reputable locally owned shop and build a business relationship with them. Your new shop may not always be the best price every time but it is well worth the tiny extra expense to have a place you can trust and it will save you money in the long run.
You’ve known the name AAMCO for more than 50 years. You know our slogan: “Double A (beep-beep) M-C-O.” Well, we didn’t become one of the world’s most recognized transmission expert by mistake. We know transmissions and when the time comes when you need transmission service, no one does it better than your local AAMCO expert technicians.
If our initial diagnosis calls for service, you can be sure it’ll be done right with AAMCO. Or maybe your drivability problems can be solved with a fluid change or our proprietary Power Purge® service?
Your vehicle’s only problem could be that your automatic transmission is not retaining fluid with no other drivability problems. You may only need our AAMCO Reseal Service. The AAMCO Reseal Service for an automatic transmission includes:
- Removal of your transmission from your vehicle and disassembly sufficient to perform the service.
- Replacement of all external seals and select components by expert AAMCO technicians to correct the fluid retention problem.
The transmission is reinstalled, fluid refilled to the full level with fresh, clean transmission fluid and any external adjustments are made as needed. Your vehicle is then road tested to ensure the transmission is functioning properly and your car, truck or SUV is ready to take you anywhere you need to go.
Our signature transmission rebuild service is the difference and gives us the confidence to offer you the best nationwide warranty in the business. Whether you drive a car, truck or SUV. Manual or automatic transmission. Foreign or domestic. Luxury or economy. We know your transmission.
Drive a manual transmission? We know those too! Our Transmission Multi-Point Inspection check may find your problem is with your clutch and cannot be corrected by external adjustments, repair or replacement of a clutch-related component. Your certified AAMCO expert technician will then:
- Remove your vehicle’s transmission.
- Inspect the clutch disc, pressure plate, flywheel and related components.
- Replace any required components to meet AAMCO’s exacting standards.
- Reinstall of the transmission.
- Refill with fresh, clean fluid.
- Perform a lift check to ensure proper clutch installation and adjustment.
Your vehicle is then road tested to ensure proper clutch operation, and your car, truck or SUV is ready to go for miles and miles to come.
THE HEATER CORE IS THE SOURCE OF HEAT FOR THE INTERIOR OF YOUR CAR, TRUCK OR SUV. IT IS TECHNICALLY PART OF THE COOLING SYSTEM IN YOUR VEHICLE.
Maintenance and Care:
Proper maintenance of your cooling system will help keep the heater in good condition. Depending on the type of coolant used in your vehicle, coolant typically should be changed about every two years or 24,000 miles. Please refer to your owner’s manual for factory recommended maintenance intervals for your specific vehicle. Typical signs of a faulty heater core are poor output from the heater, coolant on your vehicle’s interior floor, or a strange smell while the heat is on. Problems with a heater core generally get worse with time, so if you notice any of these symptoms, have the system checked by the expert technicians at AAMCO.
BRAKE PADS AND SHOES ARE WEARABLE PARTS IN THE BRAKING SYSTEM. ROTORS AND DRUMS ARE METAL AND MORE DURABLE.
Maintenance and Care:
Your car’s brake system should be inspected annually to ensure everything is in good working order. Brakes over time will wear out, so eventually they will need replacement. Catching brake problems before you reach the metal-to-metal point (likely to mean replacement of rotors or drums) may save you money, so if you have any of the common symptoms of brake trouble, have your brakes checked promptly. Symptoms of brake trouble include squealing brakes, a spongy or hard pedal when you press on the brakes, or grinding brakes. Your local AAMCO center offers a wide array of services for brakes, from inspections to brake fluid changes to complete brake jobs.

Thіѕ can cause scratches on thе glass. A plastic ѕсrареr іѕ very affordable аnd саn be fоund in most ѕtоrеѕ уоu visit. Nеvеr роur hot wаtеr on your windshield. If you wаlk out аnd nоtісе thаt уоur wіndѕhіеld іѕ ісу, you mау соnѕіdеr роurіng a large сuр оf hot water on thе glаѕѕ tо mеlt the ice. Thіѕ is actually a vеrу bаd іdеа. Lаrgе tеmреrаturе сhаngеѕ can саuѕе the glass tо crack. It is bеѕt tо turn оn thе саr defroster аnd let thе glass ѕlоwlу wаrm uр. Park уоur vеhісlе іn a gаrаgе оr undеr a shelter. If роѕѕіblе, park your vеhісlе іn an аrеа where іt will be іnѕulаtеd frоm thе hаrѕh еnvіrоnmеnt. This wіll nоt оnlу protect it frоm ісе, but frоm falling limbs or оthеr hazards thіѕ tіmе оf уеаr.
Rераіr аll сrасkеd оr сhірреd glass. Evеn іf уоu hаvе been drіvіng аrоund fоr mоnthѕ wіth a chip in your glаѕѕ, thе соld wеаthеr саn саuѕе thаt сhір to ѕрrеаd ԛuісklу into a сrасk. It is muсh mоrе аffоrdаblе tо have chips repaired bеfоrе they ѕрrеаd. In fасt, mаnу іnѕurаnсе companies wіll рау thе full рrісе fоr a rераіr. Onсе thе сhір spreads іntо a lаrgе сrасk, thе windshield wіll need tо bе rерlасеd.
As you prepare fоr wіntеr trаvеl, dо not neglect уоur windshield. It is an essential ѕаfеtу fеаturе оf your vеhісlе аnd ѕhоuld bе given thе аttеntіоn it rеԛuіrеѕ. Wіth a lіttlе саrе аnd maintenance, уоur wіndѕhіеld ѕhоuld remain іn gооd condition аll season.
Please join our effort! We are a group of community members who’ve organized a campaign to encourage voters to support the Keller ISD bond election coming up on November 4th. Keller ISD is one of the fastest growing school districts in North Texas and we need this bond election to pass to keep Keller ISD exceptional.
There is a well-funded, organized “Vote No” campaign led by outsiders from Austin and beyond. We can’t allow these outsiders to influence the outcome of an election that affects our kids! This vote must be influenced by people who have a vested interest in the kids of KISD. If you think you would like to help out please join us this Tuesday September 23rd.
We will meet every Tuesday evening at 6:00pm at the Keller Roundhouse next to La Casita and just south of Bottlecap Alley at 107 W. Vine St. at Highway 377.
Please email Matthew Mucker at firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to participate in this campaign to ensure we keep Keller ISD exceptional… and defeat the outsiders determined to sink our election for their political gain.
Hope to see you this Tuesday the 23rd at 6pm!
As I sit in my office on this rainy and cool afternoon, I feel very humbled. The editor of this wonderful local newspaper, in an obvious moment of weakness and sleep deprivation, has agreed to let me write a column about the inside world of the auto repair business. Let me first say that even though I now own this little auto repair business, I have a terrible miss-trust of the auto repair industry in general, whether national chains, auto dealerships or local shops. You see, I don’t come from this industry and still think of myself as a consumer, not an auto guy. Sure, I was like a lot of kids that like to work on my cars, but times have changed and so has the technology. I will endeavor to help you understand more about this business, some of the little secrets and how to choose a great shop and bring you stories of customers we come across so you can hopefully avoid some of the pitfalls customers endure or inflict upon themselves.
To give you some background, I was in the furniture industry for 26+ years with the last 17 being a senior executive turning around struggling 40M-120M Manufacturing Companies. It was a great career until we decided to move from Southlake to Rural Mississippi to turn around an incredible high end manufacturer. The company treated us so graciously and generously but acclimating to rural MS proved difficult for our mixed raced family. People were nice, but there was a hierarchy to life there that we just couldn’t agree with so I left my career and brought my wife and 3 beautiful little kids back to this area with no job and 2 house payments.
I decided after racking up more than 1.5 million miles on commercial airlines, it was time to tone down the travel and watch my kids grow up so we decided to set our roots down in Keller and to start a business. In my infinite wisdom, I wanted to start a business that consumers generally despised, hated, miss-trusted and any other adjective that describes the auto repair industry. I figured if we could do it differently, better, more transparently and not make customers pay for our mistakes, we would be successful. By and large we have been very blessed, but we haven’t been unilateral in our success; so in the coming months I will attempt to give you a better perspective of this business and address subjects you let me know are important to you. I will answer honestly or not at all, that is my promise.
I look forward to opening this industry up to you a little, investigating what makes a good shop and how to potentially spot a not so good shop. Once you find that special shop or mechanic, hold on to them for dear life as they are rare and hard to find.
